The history of Vietnam airlines has its roots back in January of 1956, as in this year Vietnam’s civil aviation department was established by the Government that gave birth to the civil aviation industry in Vietnam. In the beginning Vietnam airlines were operated by very small fleet which had only five air crafts namely IL-14, AN-2, Aero-45 and they served domestic flights only. This domestic service was started in September 1956.  In the period of 1976 and 1980, the airline saw bigs expansion and started their flights to some regions of Asia that included Cambodia, Laos and regular scheduled flights to China, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and charter services to Singapore. At the end of this time period, the civil aviation of Vietnam became the member of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Vietnam airlines became official carrier of Vietnam in April 1993, which served as major turning point for the country. Vietnam Airlines Corporation started their working on 27 May 1996, with the 20 aviation businesses and the airline itself. Vietnam airlines introduced the new logo of Golden Lotus and showed its corporate identity which showed the potential of airline to become one of the leading air lines in the world. With the launch of these new innovative ideas Vietnam airlines represented a new brand strategy along with doing significant improvements in the infrastructure, fleet of the airline and operations.
 
As far as fleet of the airline is concerned, they added B777 in 2003, in their fleet which is the air craft, with latest state of the art technology and gave a way to modernization of airline’s fleet. After three years that is in 2006 Vietnam airlines became one of the most modern fleet airlines in that region. Vietnam airlines have been in business for 15 years now and have shown consistently good performance with 10 percent annual growth rate every year except 1997 when Asian financial crises broke out. The official airline of Vietnam, Vietnam airlines have come a long way with many great land marks to its credit to become one of the major competitors in the Asian aviation market, with a latest fleet that comprises of Boeing planes, Airbus which are handled by very well trained professionals.

Vietnam airlines have begun their working with non-regular services in two domestic destinations. As of today Vietnam airlines are serving in 19 cities throughout the country and 42 international destinations in United States of America, Australia, Europe and Asia. These services also include code shared services to some destinations. Vietnam airlines have proven their mark in industry with short span of time and have become one of the finest airlines of that region.
