Turkish airlines were established under the law no. 2186 in Ankara. In the beginning, airline was named as state airlines administration and worked under the department of ministry of defense. The fleet of the airline comprised of King Bird which has 5 seats, 1 ATH-9 with 10 seats and 2 Junkers F-13 with 4 seats. In 1935, the administration of the airline was turned over to the Ministry of Public Works. In 1938, the name of the airline was changed to General directorate of state airlines and it started working under the ministry of transportation. In this period of time DC-3 aircraft joined the fleet. In the year of 1947, the airline served its first international destination which was Ankara, Istanbul and Athens.

In 1956, the airline was reformed and started working under a special constitution and was renamed as Turk Hava Yollari A.O. The capital investment for airline at that time was 60 Million TL. F-27 Viscount joined the fleet of turkish airline in the year of 1958 to 1960. The first DC-9 jet was included in the fleet of the airline in the year of 1967, and that was the start of jet age for turkish airlines.

In1971, B-707 was included in the fleet of the airline on lease. Two other aircrafts of F-27 and DC-10 joined the fleet of the airline, F-27 replaced F-28 aircraft. In 1974, B727 joined the fleet of turkish airline. In the year of 1984, company was reclassified as a state economic enterprise and the capital of company was again 60 Billion TL. In the following year of 1985, AirBus 310 joined the fleet. The airline expanded its services to Fareast in 1986, with the addition of Singapore route in their flight network. In the year of 1987, capital of the airline was raised to 150 Billion TL. In 1988, a new route of New York was added in the services of turkish airline through route of Brussels.

In the later years, many other international and domestic destinations were included in the services of turkish airlines. In 1990, the capital of the airline was raised to 700 billion TL which was further raised to 2 trillion in 1991. That increased the scope of privatization of turkish airlines. In 1994, the issued capital of the airline was raised to 6 trillion and turkish airline introduced direct flights to New York. The airline has made its mark in the industry with phenomenal growth and great services being provided to customers.
