Thai airway is the national carrier of kingdom of Thailand. The official name of the air line is thai airways international public company. Thai air operates regional, domestic as well as inter-continent flights from their main operational center in Bangkok. The total share of the company is 16,988,765,500 Baht In the year of 2005. From which 53.77% is owned by the Ministry of Finance, under Thai Government. In 2004 the total assets of the company were round about 193,211 million Baht, thai airlines have maintained their profitability from last 40 years consecutively. Thaiair was founded in 1960, it was the joint venture of three companies which included Thailand’s domestic carrier, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and thai airways company. In the beginning Scandinavian Airlines have provided 30% budget for this airline in the form of two million Baht.
Along with the initial investment SAS have also provided managerial, operational and marketing expertise along with the training assistance to build a fully independent national airline within the shortest time span available. Along with the passage of time Thai nationals were able to take full control over their airline with the training and experience and in 1987 expatriates were less than one percent of staff based in Thailand. After 17 years of service in 1977 Thai government have bought remaining 15%shares from SAS and thai airways became completely independent airline which was fully owned by Thai people.
A big land mark came in the way of thai airlines in the year of 1960 when they started flights to 9 overseas destinations catering to different destinations within the continent of Asia. In 1971 thai airways have launched their international services to Australia accompanied by flights to Europe in 1972. In 1980 company has started flights to North America as well. With the immense growth of thai airlines it became the official national carrier of Thailand and thai airways company was merged in to this company, which increased its shares to 2,230 million Baht from 1,400 million Baht.
