In the year of 1912, SAS, a Danish parent company was formed which was named as Det Danske LuftFartselskab, this company got listed in Copenhagen Stock Market in the year of 1920. Aero transport which was SAS Swedish parent company was formed in 1924. In 1927 Det Norske Luftfartselskap was founded which was Norwegian parent company.
In the year of 1946 Scandinavian airlines were formed, from three other companies which were Det Danske Luftfartselskab, Svensk Interkontinetal Lufttrafik AB (SILA) and Det Norske Luftfartselskap A/S (DNL).
Scandinavian airlines operated their first intercontinental flight from Stockholm to New York. In the year of 1954, SAS became the first airline in the whole world which operated flights to the rout of Copenhagen and Los Angeles through polar route with the help of scheduled services. In the year of 1955 SILA was quoted on the list of stockbrokers in Sweden. This company owned the 50% shares of ABA. In the year of 1957, Scandinavian airlines were the first one who operated their flights on the route of North Pole shortcut Copenhagen through Anchorage, Tokyo. SAS was the first airline to offer North Pole round the world service.
There is another major landmark in the history of Scandinavian airlines as in 1959 SAS entered the jet age. The first jet air craft came in the service of the airline, this air craft was called Caravelle. In the year of 1960, SAS opened their first hotel which was named as SAS Royal Hotel Copenhagen. In the year of 1965, airline introduced the system of electronic reservation for the very first time in aviation industry. Air Botnia, came under SAS in the year of 1998 and became complete subsidiary of the group SAS. In the year of 1999, SAS group becomes the majority owner of Wideroe. The year of 2001 proved to be great success for company as the SAS was listed in the stock exchange of Stockholm, Copenhagen as well as in Oslo. In December SAS acquired Braathens.
In the year of 2002, Reezidor SAS hospitality signed an agreement for master franchise with Carlson Hotels world wide. In the year of 2003, airline acquired 49% shares in the Estonian Air. In the year of 2005 European Aeronautical Group was sold to Navtech Inc. by SAS. In the same year Scandinavian airline has sold Jetpak group to Polaris Private equity and 67% of SAS components were sold to Singapore Technologies Engineering. Along with that Carlson Hotels got the 25% stake share in Rezidor SAS.
SAS have renewed their strategy and now they are aiming at providing more key elements for their passengers by making it simpler to deal with Scandinavian airlines and also fly in more relaxed and comfortable environment.
