Airtran airlines have culmination of several airlines. The original airtran airways started off with Boeing 737 which operated to/from Orlando. The company was founded by Airtran Corporation which is a holding company of Mesaba airlines at Minneapolis, Minnesota. They operated at Northwest Airlink carrier and had hubs in Minneapolis and Detroit. It was named as airtran airways in 1994. The original company grew to have 11 Boeing 737 aircrafts. They served in 24 cities in the Midwest and east and provided low fare but luxury traveling to Orlando. They established their headquarters at Orlando and Florida.

Airtran airways was spun by Mesaba in 1995 and created its own separate independent company named Airways Corporation. In 10 July, 1997 ValuJet incorporation which is the holding company for ValuJet Airlines declared their plans for acquiring Airways Corporation which was holding company for airtran airways. This deal was supposed to close on 17 November, 1997. In the September of 1997 ValuJet changed their name to airtran airlines and so the two companies started to operate with the same name even before they merged in each other. Airtran airways had their hub in Orlando and Florida. On the other hand, airtran airlines operated through a hub in Atlanta.

In 1998 both companies merged and worked under the same name of airtran airways. The hub remain in Atlanta whereas, the new firm had combined hubs in Orlando, Florida on the date of 28th January, 1998. Management of the company changed in 1999 and the new people focused more on building the rout of network and concentrating on cities in Washington and Baltimore, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Now the airline has become strong competitor in the market with youngest complete Boeing Fleet. Airtran airlines cater to more than 56 cities with the help of more then seven hundred flights per day. Crew of airtran airways has grown in to the amount of over 9,000 who work to serve approximately twenty million travelers per day. Airtran airways are continuing their growth steadily by providing quality services in low fares.
