Initially it was called Marthasville after the name of the daughter of the then governor of the city of Atlanta, in the year 1842. It was often called Terminus for its location because it is located at the end of the Western & Atlantic railroad line. In the year 1845 the name was again changed and it was replaced with Atlanta. This name was suggested by the chief engineer of the Georgia Railroad, John Thomson.
