Plenty of webmasters are making plenty of money from Goggle’s Adsense program. I certainly don’t claim I know how to get rich with Adsense. Google is tight lipped about many of the Adsense details. In addition, there are many folks out there who know much more about Adsense site optimization. What I do know, however, is that following a few guidelines can help webmasters make the most of their sites with a minimal time investment. Here are my three favorites.
- 1. Niche Site
I don’t have the resources to compete with the big operations. I try to focus my Adsense sites on a niche topic. My site will be targeting just a few keywords which are centered around a specific topic. This specialization helps my site’s keywords be competitive with other sites.
- 2. Proper Content
The first time a page queries Google for Adsense ads is important. Google notices it is a new page and will index it almost immediately. This is a great time for me to make sure that the content is just right. The reason for this is that, depending on the popularity of the site, the Google Crawler may not be back for quite some time. If I have no content or content that is not relevant to my site I may get PSA’s (Public Service Ads) or ads that are not relevant to my site or my readership.
- 3. Ad Placement
Google publishes a map that shows where ads generally do well and where they don’t. The theme is pretty simple, though.
Paydirt: The best location is in the center of the page’s content above the fold. Placing an Adsense ad in the center of my content isn’t very pleasing to the look of my site and runs the risk of alienating some readers. To make it less obtrusive I choose Adsense styles that match my page’s styles to help the ad blend as well as possible.
Runner Up: The second best area is in the upper left below any navigation headers.
- Reality Check
Despite these tips I’m not getting rich. I understand that implementing just a few ideas isn’t going to push me to the top of the earnings heap. But it will make sure I’m making the best of my sites earnings potential with a minimal investment of my limited time.
